Biya Finally Puts Asunder Nfon Mukete, Benjamin Itoe’s Senatorial Union

By Maxcel Fokwen
Cameroon’s Head of State, Paul Biya, has finally set asunder one of his party’s strongest duo in Meme Division, Southwest Region, Senator Nfon V.E Mukete and Benjamin Mutanga Itoe in a decree of Thursday, April 12, appointing 30 Senators across the nation.
Mukete and Itoe have since 2015 experience a turbulent political relationship after the reorganisation of the basic organs of the CPDM, but they remained as Substantive and Alternate Senators respectively.
That was the pair Biya made in the pioneer Senate spanning 2013 to March 2018.
Surprisingly, the presidential golden pen on Thursday’s decree set asunder what it paired in 2013. Nfon Mukete, whose mandate was renewed at the Senate this time around no longer, has as Alternate former Minister Itoe. Given the order in which the names were read over the State media, pundits say former General Certificate of Education, GCE Board Registrar, Dr Humphrey Ekema Monono is Nfon Mukete’s new Alternate .Others said it could be one of the national Vice President’s of the Women wing of the CPDM Agnes Mambe.
Monono hails from Fako, while Mambe is from Ndian extraction. Both names appeared as Alternates in the Presidential fiat.
In the bill up to the first Senate, Itoe served as Vice to Nfon Mukete in the CPDM campaign team for Meme in the 2013 elections. They combed the entire Meme singing in unism for the CPDM. Observers hold that , that is how the retired Judge of international fame rebuild his political tentacles within the system after a professional spell out of the country.
Thus, Itoe bounced back as President General of the Bakundu Cultural and Development Union, BACDU and Board Chairman of the Cameroon Development Cooperation, CDC. All these previously held by another Bakundu late Chief Henry Namata Elangwe.
Today, Itoe is one of the Commissioners of the Bilingualism Commission and CPDM Permanent Divisional Coordinator for Meme.
On February 6, 2016 the Itoe-Mukete divide played out fully as the latter was not in agreement with that date to stage a CPDM joint section conference across Kumba. Itoe staged the event and Mukete was absent. On February 8 that year, Mukete fired back accusing Itoe of ‘cheap political blackmail’.
Senatorial Melodrama, Reconciliation
Ten days to the Senatorial elections, Mukete and Itoe appeared to the public as having reconciled at a meeting held within the confines of Kumba Government Delegate’s Cabinet. Emerging from that meeting, the eldest member of Senate and CDC Board Chair shared public pleasantries. This was the first in public for over two years.
Paradoxically, Itoe did not take part in a reconciliation meeting staged at the inner bowls of the Nfon’s Palace on March 24; a day to the Senate elections. Other rare appearances at the Nfon’s palace were Senator Otte, Tabot Lawson among others. In the evening hours of same day, Itoe, Mukete, Otte, Tabot ,Ngoh Nkelle and other CPDM Section Presidents celebrated the party’s anniversary together in Kumba.
