Seven Policemen Detained For Theft

CameroonPostline.com — Seven policemen were recently been detained in the Douala Central Prison for theft, judiciary and penitentiary sources have disclosed to APA-Douala.

The policemen are accused of stealing and looting goods during the recent Congo market fire incident. This explains why the Congo Market Sellers Association of Douala has deposited a complaint requesting their trial in court.

The detainees include: Alain Engono, Jonathan Motina, Paul Djom, Tina Olinga, Moulongo Ekouti, Sylvain Ntonga and Philippe Essoubo. Sources at the General Delegation of National Surety say six of the policemen serve with the Equipes spéciales d’intervention rapide (ESIR) of Douala and one serves with the Groupement special d’operation (GSO) in Yaounde, on mission to Douala during the fire incident.

Owing to the short circuit and abrupt return of electricity, a fire incident was provoked on July 3. According to the Douala Urban Council, the incident caused the collapse of 550 businesses worth about FCFA 1 billion.
